From the Atbara Train to the Gazan Shore, 2023

From the Atbara Train to the Gazan Shore was created shortly after the genocidal Israeli aggression that took place on October 7th, and six months into the counterrevolutionary, imperialist war of extraction in Sudan. The piece ties together resistance symbols from both Sudanese and Palestinian revolutionary traditions, highlighting a long-standing history of transnational solidarity and an emergent one as Sudan enters an unprecedented era of mass violence and destruction. The piece weaves in traditional Palestinian motifs of resistance like the Handala, who overlooks the crescent moon and a liberated Al-Aqsa - alongside the seminal image of Sudanese revolutionaries boarding the train from Atbara to Khartoum in 2019, where they saw the fall of Omar Al Bashir’s 30 decade reign of terror. From the Atbara Train to the Gazan Shore is an exercise of revolutionary imagination, and an attempt to synthesize multiple visual vernaculars of resistance amidst a political and historical moment fraught with despair.
